What is travel?

Is travel a 12 hour flight across the ocean? Is travel flying to a new country? Is travel flying to a new city? Is travel getting in your car and driving to a new town?

What is travel to you?

I’ve always felt as though there is a misconception of what travel really is. Travel is flying 12 hours across the ocean but that’s not all it is… Travel can be driving to a neighboring town or even 10 minutes to a hiking trail or lake. What is travel to you?

Who determines what travel really is?

We do! Of course it may not be as impressive to say, “Yesterday I drove to the neighboring town to see this cool waterfall!” … as it is to say, “Yesterday I flew to Thailand!” … But they’re both travel, one may take more time but in both situations you are traveling.

Travel is what you make it; if you want to travel to a new continent then do it! If you want to travel close to home then do it!

Travel wherever you want… in the words of Shia Labeouf, JUST DO IT! Haha

just do it, shia labeouf

Many times in my life, I’d go as far as saying everywhere I’ve lived, there are people who dislike their own city. I’ve always wondered why it is that we can’t see the beauty which surrounds us so close to home; now, I believe it’s just that because we are in such close proximity all the time we believe nobody else would ever want to visit it.

Surprisingly, regardless of where you live in the world I am certain there is someone, somewhere who wishes they could visit your home!

This past summer I’ve spent plenty of time immersing myself in places around my home city; I went out and explored places which I had never been yet they’ve always been within reach. I was astonished by all the beautiful places and experiences I had been missing out on! For example, Raven Lake, it’s a gorgeous, yet moderately difficult hike located close to my city. I did the hike with some friends and was absolutely blown away by the reward, a clear blue lake with a cabin located lakeside.

Teapot Mountain, Moderate Hikes, Hiking, British Columbia

Get out there and travel; embrace it for what it is and experience everything, even if it’s in your own city or country (which is travel too!)

What’s your take? Do you agree?

What is travel to you?

Dawn, you are so right about traveling in your own “backyard”! Raven Lake looks incredibly beautiful, and although that isn’t surprising(BC in general, is so gorgeous) – it is easy for me to forget that there is such natural beauty in Canada. Just the past summer, my dad posted a bunch of photos of this beautiful cave+lake that’s been a 20min drive from my house my whole life and I have somehow never been. I have to remember that about Singapore as well – as much as I pine for the beaches of Thailand or the food in Vietnam, there is a lot of cool stuff to do here too!

We traveled home, the USA, and North America first before going outside the continent. It is not about where you go. It is about why you do.

travelling is going to other places
perhaps the other side of the globe or a walk around your hometown or visiting your neighbour to experience other people/places/foods/languages/habits/cultures
so basically to explore life to the fullest

OM– love that you referenced Shia Lebeouff!! HA! I’ve been trying so hard to be a tourist in my own city lately! I just have to get rid of that itch!

Travel to me is getting out and doing something, even if it is just in your home town visiting the local art gallery.

Anything can be travel. Even if I go out for a walk in my very own hometown and I get to appreciate its beauty, to me that is travel!

Exactly! I’m glad I’m not the only one who understands! It’s important to take advantage and be thankful for the beauty surrounding you. :)

It is strange how many people, including me until recently, don’t consider anything local as travel. I actually live in an amazing and diverse region of Australia but have always considered it boring.
Now I have started looking at it through the eyes of someone who has ventured far from home to see it, and now it looks so much more interesting.

For me, travel is going anywhere. It could be a long flight or it could be just taking a 5 minute walk around streets ive never used where I live

I’ll never be a “let’s climb the tallest mountain, jump out of the highest plane” type of girls. So I’m not that type of traveler. I fully subscribe to the slow travel movement. I don’t want to be rushed, I want to explore every hidden corner of the places I visit. I tend to stick to my current home country of Italy – there is SO much that people miss outside of the big three of Rome/Florence/Venice.

Travelling for me is to discover new places and new cultures. This can be in my backyard or at the other side of the world. That is what is fun about travelling, you can do it anywhere, anytime and anyhow :)

Oh well, travelling doesnt have to mean going out of your own country. For me its a means understading and be fascinated by something foreign to you. Or something that is out of your own box. I personally love to travel and discover, it gives me in a sense of fulfillment – for me anyway.

I think any place you go to do something is travel. It can be near or far. I try to travels someplace new every week. It’s important to do something to get a change of perspective. It is easy to get stuck in the home, work, school routine.

Good question :) For me traveling is meeting new people and cultures, having the feeling I am far from home. Which means: finding an other form of comfort and being even more open to your surroundings. Some times I travel in my own city. Just push away the thoughts of ‘I’ve walked here 1000 times’ but walk like it’s the first time there. Things become much more beautiful that way. Maybe it’s about really listening and really looking, because you see something for the first time :) Takes you away from your thoughts!

‘to travel’ or what is trave is too general. It can be whatever that invoves going from one place to another however for me it means exploring and learning new things about a foreign land.

Travel to be is about discovery, growth, expanding your horizons and adventures. That could literally be just over the fence of your back garden or 2000 miles from home.

Lovely post! I completely agree. It’s so interesting to do all the touristy things in your home town or surrounding towns. When I started looking up other peoples blogs about where I lived I was amazed at the things I was missing out on as a local! haha. Travel is a mindset not necessarily a huge trip or action.

I absolutely agree that you do not have to travel across the world to qualify for having traveled! Our Canadian country is so beautiful, with so much to see and do. My ONLY qualm with dedicating myself to seeing more of our country is how BIG IT IS and how costly it is to go from West to East :( It will take a few trips for me in order to see the big chunk I’m dying to see :)

Great Post! This is totally what I try to preach! Although travelling to other countries is amazing and I wouldn’t be without it, travelling in our own backyard is just as valuable. I for one aim to see us much of the UK as possible. Thank you for sharing x Kat
