Skyfest | Quesnel’s International AirShow

At the beginning of August I got the chance to check out Quesnel Skyfest, Quesnel’s International Airshow. (I’m not saying that as if I wasn’t going to go already. ;)) It took off with a bang starting July 31st with a twilight show then two days shows, August 1st and 2nd. The show was highly entertaining with acts featuring a wide variety of aerobatic pilots, two Russian Yaks, a T-6 Harvard, a P-51 Mustang, a fully aerobatic sailplane, the Canadian Armed Forces Parachute Team – The SkyHawks, the Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds and CF-18 Demo Team.

It was an exhilarating experience, as always!

This year I left the show feeling an immense passion and need to go skydiving … If you know me, this really isn’t the type of thing I would go out of my way to sign up for. Saying that though, in the past month,  prior to Skyfest, I’ve become quite obsessed with skydiving. Maybe I’ve lost my mind, haha.

Two years ago I went to Skyfest, my first time ever experiencing an air show; and lets just say, my mind was utterly blown! The CF-18 was first up and the sheer power of it taking off brought tears to my eyes.

Yes… I was one of those people standing there giggling like a little school girl with my mouth wide open while my mind registered how AMAZING this jet flying in front of me was… haha.

**Airshow Tips + What to Bring!!**

  • Pack a lunch, tons of water and beverages; an airshow is typically a full day event, you wouldn’t want to miss a performance because you didn’t plan ahead! (Or get heatstroke from being dehydrated!)

  • Bring a chair, cloth material chairs can be purchased for relatively cheap and make your day a lot more comfortable!

  • Bring an umbrella, any size is fine, as long as you can cover your self up from the sun.

  • Bring Sunscreen and use it!! Even sunscreen can’t stop you from getting a sunburn if you’re out in the sun for 3+ hours, I highly recommend an umbrella!

  • Camera, if you’d like. It’s always great to capture photos of the event so you can cherish the memories you have of your fun day!

This looks like a lot of fun! I have attended air shows in the past and really liked them. Anything that has to do with planes is awesome in my opinion. :-)

Yes!! I find air shows to be so enjoyable, it’s pretty mesmerizing watching the planes do aerobatics through the sky! ^_^

Photos look amazing Dawn! And I totally encourage you to make skydiving happen – it’s such an exhilarating feeling unlike anything else you’ve ever experienced before, I’m so glad the show inspired you to want to give this a go :) It’s scary at first but the minute you touch the ground after having soared through the sky you’ll want to go again! I was running off the Adrenalin for a full week – totally go!! :)

Thanks Meg! I’m certainly going to make it happen and I’m pretty certain it isn’t going to be a one time thing. :D I’m definitely terrified but so adrenaline do just at the thought of doing it! I was checking out your epic pictures of you skydiving, I’m just hoping I get as great of pictures as you did. :D

I’ve never been to an airshow but would love to.
I can’t believe how precise those guys are and how dangerous it could be for them! Really really an impressive work!

It’s really is amazing how they can fly to perfect in formation and how so many things could go wrong in a split second. Yet, they do it and they’re absolutely amazing at it!! :) I HIGHLY recommend checking out an airshow, I found it utterly mind blowing the first time I went!!

Oh, this must have been really fun. I’ve seen a couple of good air shows before, but this one seems much better. I don’t think I’d like to go sky diving though.

It’s such an amazing show, so many amazing pilots and planes showing different ways to push the limits. As for skydiving, I felt the same way about two month ago, haha. :P

Unfortunately I never saw any air shows as a kid, even more reason to make up for it now though! :D

Love your photos! I’ve been to two air shows–one in Florida at the Sun n’ Fun in Lakeland, and another in Greece, where the pre-show was right along the coast in Athens. I’ve always wanted to skydive as well!

    • Dawn Kealing August 16, 2015 at 7:51 pm #

They’re pretty amazing to watch, hey?! I would love to see the ones you’ve been too, that’s so cool! Airshow in Greece?! Wow! :)

Well, I’ll let you know if I recommend it, after I go! (I’m sure I will haha.)

When I was a kid we lived close to an American Air Base that hosted an air show every year. The week prior to the show we could watch the planes practicing above our house. It was great fun. I particularly loved watching the parachute teams. This show looks and sounds spectacular!

Oh my gosh! What an amazing experience that must have been; I’d truly cherish those memories. This was my first time witnessing a parachute team and it completely blew my mind!

I loved these kind of shows when I was a child. I remember once the Frecce Tricolore (who regularly do shows around the world) came to my city and we all watched their show from the beach. It was a lot of fun!

    • Dawn Kealing August 17, 2015 at 12:06 am #

That sounds absolutely amazing!! The only thing that could make this show better is if it were at the beach. ;)

I’ve been to a couple of air shows, and they make great days out. As for skydiving … nah. Why throw yourself out of a perfectly functional plane for no reason :D

They really do! It’s such a great way to spend a day outside. :) Really good entertainment. Haha, as for skydiving, it might not be for everyone, I’m not sure it’s even for me, but I feel like I should do it at least once! :)

  11. I love airshows. They are a great way to show off some amazing flying. It is so cool to get to see the planes up close and not be sitting in them.

We used to have an air show in our little Illinois town, but it’s long gone. Chicago has a great one, though. When I worked in downtown Chicago we could hear, and sometimes see, the planes from our office windows as they practiced the day before the big Chicago Air & Water Show.
