The Ancient burial grounds of Saqqara served as a necropolis for the Ancient Egyptian capital, Memphis. There are many ‘step’ pyramids in the area, they get the name step-pyramids because they have a rectangular base which as the pyramid gets higher there is a bench, or step. The sites of Saqqara and Memphis are two sites I recommend seeing if you are visiting Egypt. Having a guide is always better than just going on your own as well because that way you are able to actually learn about the site and its history.
**Travel note: If you do go to a site like this in Egypt and you do not have a guide there may be locals at the entrance areas that will tell you they will guide you through the site. They will be expecting a tip at the end if you say yes. This happened to us and we told them no because we did not want a guide of the site but the guy did not listen and followed us around. After looking at all the main sites he will ask you for a tip and if you say no, which we did, he will not leave you alone until you tip him. It was a bit of a stressful situation but I just recommend being very clear and upfront that you do NOT need a guide and that you will NOT tip if he chooses to show you around. We ended up tipping the guy, way less than what he was asking for though because he was asking for a very large tip.***
